 Shakespeare in the 21st century

Di Earnshaw
English (incl head of gifted and talented)
Handsworth Grange School

The project

Encourage a mixed ability Y9 English class to engage more with Shakespeare, and in particular to encourage a group of boys to progress from level 4 to 5.

The constraints

Insufficient lCT resources and the need to train the teacher on new software.

The solution

The City Learning Centre Triples project proved an ideal way to move the project forward. Two meetings were held with the teacher to run through the software and a possible lesson structure. Two morning sessions were arranged for pupils with transport organised by the City Learning Centre. Di was able to combine a class and some non contact time and the Centre fitted around these arrangements.

The pupils were quick to learn the Kar2ouche software, and indeed two pupils who had experience of using the program led the class. They took two scenes from Macbeth and became so engrossed that they skipped the mid morning break on offer!

The outcomes

“Shakespeare in text can be a killer if you don’t bring it alive.” The words of Di Earnshaw. The City Learning Centre project encouraged students to make points about each scene, provide evidence in support and to explain why they had selected it. In addition to keeping students on task, their work will be recalled from the computer and displayed on the interactive whiteboard back at Handsworth, thus providing an important revision tool. The training that Di has received has now been cascaded to other English teachers and a similar Kar2ouche project will be run at the school next year.
